Heaven on Earth is a Paradox

March 11, 2025

Heaven is 73º and sunny with a coke on the porch. So it seemed as I pulled into my driveway and spotted my next door neighbor.

Essie doesn't prefer the longer days of summer though, now it's bright when she wants to go to bed.

The paradox was shining on her face as we continued to talk about kids today and drugs and farming in Louisiana and how things change when you get older.

Further—Texas lakes, drivers licenses, kittens that used to live under the front porch and her plan for revenge against the neighbor that poisoned them. The sun sets lower.

Raising 12 grandkids, adopting 3 others, losing 2 husbands. There are now more shadows than light.

What's for dinner?

Pot pie.

Sounds pretty good.

Yeah.

It's about that time.

Alright kiddo.

Alright Essie.

See you around.

Yes ma'am.

Take care.

Take care.

In my heart, the sun rose as it set behind me.

Frost melted as shadows grew.

I grew warm and the temperature dipped.

We carry the paradox in our bodies.

Every morning, every night,

Until the night will be no more.
